Abstract
The materials for study consisted of 20 chronic cervicitis, 20 chronic cerviitis with squamous metaplasia, 20 uterine cervix in leiomyoma, 20 uterine cervix in adenomyosis, and non-tumorous portion of squamous cell carcinoma of uterine cervix, that resected for definite treatment of uterine disease at Chosun University Hospital from April, 1987 to March, 1990. All cases were performed of Masson-Harmperl stain, Grimelius stain, and immunohistochemical stain for neuron specific enolase and chromogranin for detection of neuroendocrine cells in uterine cervix. The results showed that a few neuroendocrine cells were identified in normal uterine cervix. In chronic cervicitis and squamous metaplasia, the neuroendocrine cells were increased. This neuroendocrine cells were seen at area of hyperplastic reserve cells. In conclusion, the neurocrine cells were increased in the all disease of uterine cervix, but these increase rates were variable. Their functions were not clarified, however, it regarded as protective function to injurious agent.
